CVS to open ‘hundreds’ of SmileDirect in-store shops
CVS is partnering with SmileDirectClub to bring its “teledentistry” service to the physical space.
After a successful pilot in 13 CVS Pharmacy stores, SmileDirectClub will open “SmileShops” in hundreds of the drugstore retailer’s locations in 2019, with the potential to expand to more than a 1,000 stores during the next several years. The agreement with CVS will more than double the current physical footprint of SmileDirectClub, a direct-to-consumer platform that offers fittings and deliveries of orthodontic clear aligners. (SmileDirect also recently entered into an in-store pilot with Walgreens.)
Here’s how it works: Customers age 12 or older (with all adult teeth and mild to moderate crowding or spacing issues) can walk into a participating CVS location for assistance or register for an appointment online. In-store associates, called “SmileGuides,” will assist customers, including providing them with a free 3D digital image of their teeth, teeth whitening kits, and information on clear aligner therapy.
A member of SmileDirectClub's digital network of more than 240 state-licensed dentists and orthodontists will approve and manage a custom clear aligner treatment plan. Upon the treating doctor's and the customer's approval of the treatment plan, aligners are sent directly to the customer's door. Through SmileDirectClub's teledentistry platform, customers can check in with their doctor every 90 days, and more frequently if necessary.
