Amazon’s newest delivery confirmation method: a ‘porch selfie?’

Amazon has a new way to confirm it has delivered packages.

The online giant’s Amazon Logistics (AMZL) delivery division has quietly launched a new program that ensures packages are being delivered accurately and safely. Called Photo on Delivery, the new program relies on photos to confirm that customer packages have been delivered — especially when a package is left unattended.

“Capturing delivery photos is intended to help customers see that their package was safely delivered and where,” according to Amazon’s website. “The photo will focus on the placement of the package.”

Photos can be displayed on Amazon’s “Your Orders” page — the section of Amazon’s site where customers track their packages. Shoppers can access the page and delivery photo by logging in to Amazon’s site.

The company’s customer service team can also use delivery photos to troubleshoot what happened to a specific package when customers report a problem. The photos may also be audited for quality purposes, according to Amazon.

AMZL will not post delivery photos for orders shipped to an address marked confidential, such as a Wish List or Registry address, Amazon said.

Customers can opt out of the service at any time.

The service is currently available in the Seattle, San Francisco and Northern Virginia metro areas, and currently only comprises a small portion of U.S. deliveries, according to USA Today, which first reported on the service.

The Photo on Delivery service is much less invasive than the online giant’s recent launch of Amazon Key, a lock-and-camera service that enables Prime members to receive packages directly inside of their homes — even if they aren’t there.
