Walmart Canada investing $175 million in store upgrades

Walmart Canada is making a big investment to improve its in-store customer experience and optimize omnichannel shopping.

The discounter said that 23 stores across Canada are scheduled renovation by February 2019. The enhancements physical updates to provide a refreshed look and feel, including wider aisles, updated color palette, and new signage. Select locations will receive an updated exterior storefront design that provides clearer access.

Other features are being added to enhance the integration of online shopping and the in-store experience, including dedicated parking spaces for online grocery pickup. New in-store areas will be devoted to facilitate the interaction between Walmart’s online and physical operations.

On the merchandise front, Walmart is adding more product assortments to further integrate stores into the community, including new ethnic selections and organics. (The retailer noted that, on Oct. 12, it opened a new supercenter in Burnaby B.C. equipped with a vast East Asian ethnic food offering.)

“This investment in our stores is part of our commitment to provide our customers with an improved in-store shopping experience,” said Lee Tappenden, president and CEO of Walmart Canada. “We are modernizing our stores, ensuring a seamless omnichannel shopping experience and meeting evolving customer needs. As we move into 2019, we’ll continue to invest in more store remodels, including new and creative concepts in key urban stores.”
