Report: Amazon exploring unusual grocery store format

7/29/2019
Amazon’s ambitions for grocery extend beyond Whole Foods Market.

The online giant exploring a new grocery concept designed for in-store shopping as well as pickup and delivery, reported The New York Times. The format is not far removed from one described in a memo that circulated in 2017 inside Amazon, the report said, in which the proposed new stores were described as having robust sections for produce, fresh food and prepared meals, while nonperishable products would be stored on a separate floor and away from customers. (The 2017 memo was circulated before Amazon bought Whole Foods Market.)

“Shoppers could order those items with an app, and while they shopped for fresh food, the other products would be brought down in time for check out,” the report said. “There would also be an area to pick up groceries ordered online and to manage packages for delivery drivers.”

According to the Times, a recent job posting by Amazon was for a store designer on “an exciting new team,” someone interested in “creating multiple customer experiences under one roof.”
