New Ikea in Colorado to feature geothermal heating

3/16/2010

Conshohocken, Pa. Ikea has announced that contractors have been hired and a site-work permit is pending for its store in Centennial, Col. The location, scheduled to open in fall 2011, will be the first U.S. Ikea store to incorporate a geothermal component as part of the heating and cooling system. Heat will be pumped either from or into the ground, depending on weather conditions.

Ikea has retained Centennial-based Saunders Construction as the construction management firm. Atlanta-based GreenbergFarrow is the architect responsible for store design, site planning and construction documents. Geothermal Systems of Colorado will install the geothermal component.

The 415,000-sq.-ft. store will be built on 13.5 acres. Ikea currently operates more than 300 stores in 38 countries, including 37 locations in the United States.
