Macy’s begins massive renovation of Herald Square

New York -- Macy’s on Monday started work on the four-year renovation of its Herald Square flagship in New York City. In the first phase, the retailer is making over its shoe department into what it says will be the “world’s largest shoe floor,” with 300,000 pairs of shoes stepping into a new 63,000 -sq.-ft. space (retail and stock).



The new second floor space, due to be completed by fall 2012, will feature 39,000 sq. ft. feet of continuous selling space and approximately 24,000 sq. ft. devoted solely to stockrooms housing the season’s best fall footwear. The department will house new luxury shoe shops, a designer shoe salon, and curated shoe closets inspired by New York City’s trendiest neighborhoods, and a coffee, champagne and chocolate bar.



The multi-year, multi-million dollar ($400 million) renovation Macy’s project will reconfigure the legendary landmark through architectural and technological enhancements, the renovation will be one of the biggest retail remodels ever with the Manhattan flagship ultimately undergoing a total top-to-bottom transformation. Increasing its retail space to 1.2 million sq. ft., the store will bring in new departments, dining destinations and multi-level shops offering.



Main floor construction is scheduled to begin the week of March 19.
