GNC upgrading store with LEDs

8/10/2011

Satellite Beach, Fla. -- General Nutrition Centers has installed high performance, energy efficient LED bulbs from Lighting Science Group bulbs at select corporate-owned locations.

The Energy Star-approved LEDs are 80% more efficient than the halogen bulbs they replaced, are fully dimmable and have about 50% light output than competing products, according to the company.

“When considering lighting features that may affect general health, such as flicker, hum, burnout, heat and toxic materials, LEDs come out ahead of the incandescent, halogen and fluorescent fixtures, every time.” said Tom Dowd, GNC’s executive VP, chief merchandising officer and general manager, Pittsburgh.

In addition to lower energy bills, each upgraded GNC will also save money on maintenance and cooling cost, since the LEDs will last 50,000 hours and give off very little heat. GNC estimates that the lighting upgrade will be pay for itself in one to two years -- with energy and maintenance savings continuing to shave costs from the retail chain’s bottom line going forward.
