A 103-year-old, family-owned eyebrand brand known for its distinctive interiors has opened a new outpost in Manhattan.
Moscot has opened a store on 6th Avenue in the Union Square area of Manhattan, according to real estate company Stonehenge NYC. The eyewear brand operates four stores throughout New York City, as well as an e-commerce site. It also has four global locations: London, Rome, Seoul, and Tokyo.
Moscot stores blend contemporary tastes and traditional, old-word charm with a dash of Lower East Side personality. The new location, which has floor-to-ceiling glass storefront windows, incorporates Moscot’s signature design elements, including tin ceilings that add a reflective glow to the space. Other design elements include “peg and groove” throne chairs and custom-crafted "fan-do-liers," which illuminate and fan customers. The vintage "fig trays" that are used to hold the glasses pay homage to one of the second-generation family members, who repurposed wooden trays used to package figs as optical trays back in the 1930s.
"Great Grandpa Hyman (founder of Moscot) started with humble beginnings, selling eyeglasses from a pushcart along Orchard Street at the beginning of the twentieth century," said fourth-generation Moscot and CEO, Dr. Harvey Moscot. "We are continuing this tradition of pushing our cart in a twenty-first century way and are excited to join Stonehenge NYC in our newest location."
