Coworking giant delves deeper into retail with new format

1/23/2019
The We Company, formerly known as WeWork, unveiled yet another concept and this one is a combined retail, café and co-working venture.

The firm’s newest venture, called Made By We, made its debut in New York City’s Flatiron neighborhood. It is open to the public and, in contrast to the company’s other co-working spaces, does not require membership.

The new Made By We features 100 bookable workplace seats that are available on-demand or for pre-booking and six meeting rooms. It also includes a retail area that showcases products created by members of the We community and a full-service café from Bluestone Lane, an Australian-influenced hospitality and lifestyle brand known for its premium coffee and healthy eats. (Bluestone currently operates 35 cafés and coffee shops across the U.S.)

"Everything we do at The We Company, from the spaces we curate to the service offerings we provide, is intended to create meaningful human connections," said WeWork partner Julie Rice. "Made by We was launched with a vision to connect the We community with the rest of the world, and provide people with the best on-demand workspace, services, and products, no membership required."

This isn't The We Company’s first foray into retail. In June 2018, WeWork launched WeMrkt in one of its locations in downtown Manhattan. The concept is open to WeWork members only and sells products, ranging from food and beverages to office goods, created by WeWork members. The single outpost has since grown to include four markets in New York, with plans to expand further in the U.S. and internationally.

The We Company was founded (as WeWork) in 2010. It now operates 425 membership-based coworking locations in 26 countries, and counts more than 400,000 members. The company has expanded into such new areas as education (WeGrow), furnished apartments that include communal spaces (WeLive) and fitness studio (WeRise).
