Wanted: A lifestyle center for this California city

2/1/2018
A decade ago, Elk Grove, Calif., was one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. Now the city of nearly 170,000 people south of Sacramento feels it’s grown up enough to merit its own upscale shopping center.

The Elk Grove City Council has unanimously supported a proposal by the town’s economic development director to dedicate a 40-acre parcel in the town’s center to the building of a lifestyle center,” according to an item in the Elk Grove Citizen. The town owns half of that acreage and intends to purchase the other half from a local owner.

Doan argued that local residents had to travel to Roseville or Folsom to shop for high-quality goods and that the civic center parcel presented a glaring opportunity. “I don’t think you have to be very scientific to figure out we have everything middle-down and nothing middle-up. So, if you want middle-up, you’re shopping somewhere else,” Doan said.

The planner proposed a feasibility study to gauge the economic impact that could result from introducing new retail options to a growing, affluent population. “If you want better brands, we need better shopping centers,” Doan said.
