Wal-Mart Canada opening 11 supercenters in January

1/22/2015

Mississauga, Canada – Wal-Mart Canada will open 11 supercenters across the country by Jan. 29, 2015, completing its expansion for the company's current fiscal year. Walmart Canada's total store count will be 394 stores, including 280 supercenters and 114 discount stores.

These stores are part of the 35 supercenter projects planned for the company's fiscal year 2015. The projects include building new stores and expanding, remodelling or relocating existing stores. Including investments in its distribution network and ecommerce, the projects represent an investment of more than $500 million. For the first time, both Prince Edward Island (PEI) Wal-Mart locations will offer a full complement of fresh groceries.

"We're thrilled to bring our Supercenter format, offering a full complement of fresh groceries, to PEI for the first time as well as the other nine openings happening today and next week," said Gino DiGioacchino, executive VP of e-commerce and chief of operations at Wal-Mart Canada. "We want to help as many Canadian families as possible save money on their weekly groceries and their general merchandise need. We are looking forward to hearing from our customers."

Wal-Mart’s expansion comes as its rival Target Canada is preparing to shut down operations. Target has filed for creditor protection in Canadian bankruptcy court and will close all 133 stores in Canada, liquidating merchandise and most likely terminating Target Canada’s 17,600 employees.
