Vermont’s first Walmart Supercenter opens at Berlin Mall

10/22/2014

Berlin, Vt.--The Berlin Mall, in Berlin, Vt., hosted the grand opening of the state’s first Walmart Supercenter on Wednesday. The location was previously a 65,000+-sq.-ft. Walmart store that added 26,200 sq. ft. and full-line grocery offerings to bring the retailer’s first supercenter to Vermont.

“We wanted to utilize the property to better serve customers and the community,” said Berlin Mall co-owner Ken Simon. “This expansion helps meet the needs of shoppers and will help grow the economy in Central Vermont.”

The expansion is expected to add more than 50 new jobs and marks another step in the Berlin Mall’s efforts to grow business in Central Vermont. The Berlin Mall announced earlier this year the construction of a Kohl’s department store, a project that is currently going through the state and local permit process.

The expansion is just one in a long list of improvements made by mall owners since they acquired the mall in 2010. In addition to the Kohl’s project that is underway, Optical Expressions, Maurice’s, Olympia Sports and Verizon have all successfully expanded their stores in the Berlin Mall.

With the completion of the Walmart expansion, the Berlin Mall is now turning its attention to further improving its tenant mix. This will include filling a 15,000-sq.-ft. junior anchor space in the center of the mall.
