Summerlin master-plan community to host Las Vegas Black Knights

9/26/2016

Las Vegas’s first major sports franchise, the National Hockey League’s Black Knights, will build a practice facility in the Summerlin master-plan community west of the Strip.

The Howard Hughes Corporation, Summerlin’s developer, announced the signing of a 20-year ground lease with the NHL expansion franchise for a lot in the downtown area, the locus of more than 125 retailers and restaurants. Storefronts include Apple, Crate & Barrel, Dillard’s, Golfsmith, Macy’s, Shake Shack, Sur la Table, Trader Joe’s, and Ulta.

Groundbreaking is set for later this month for the two-rink practice facility, which will rise on a 4.6-acre parcel in the 300-acre downtown area. Opening is planned for next August, in time for the Black Knight’s debut 2017-2018 season.

Bill Foley, majority owner of the Black Knights, is the chairman of the board of Black Knight Financial Services, which provides technology solutions to the real estate and mortgage industries.

Las Vegas is currently engaged in an effort to bring the National Football League’s Oakland Raiders to town and establish it as a professional sports center.
