Fred Simon, landlord to hundreds of retail chains for one the world’s largest retail REITs, died last week at 89, according to a report in the Indianapolis Star.

Fred was the longtime leasing director at Simon Property Group, founded by his older brother Melvin and younger brother Herb in Indianapolis in 1960.

The Simon brothers all were born and raised in New York, but became pillars of the Indianapolis community over the decades. Fred was an avid fan of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers (owned by brother Herb) and was the founder of The Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Funeral services for Simon were held in Palm Springs, Calif.
