San Juan mall still growing at 50

8/30/2018
In 1968, the 800,000-sq.-ft. Plaza las Américas opened on Franklin Delano Roosevelt Avenue in San Juan. It featured 79 stores anchored by J.C. Penney, Velasco, Gonzalez Padin, and Woolworth. The Odd Couple played at its two-screen cinema.

Today, the cinema has 15 screens. Penney’s is the only anchor left, the others having been replaced by Sears and Macy’s. Tenants number 300 over 2 million sq. ft. — an eclectic mix ranging from Forever 21 to Carolina Herrera, Taco Bell to The Cheesecake Factory, Marshalls to Lacoste, and Alex and Ani to Tiffany & Co.

Plaza Las Américas will throw a golden anniversary party on Sept. 12, at which it will unveil a 20-ft.-high, seven-tier cake in its central atrium and honor the customers that have helped San Juan’s premier retail center thrive and grow.

“The Plaza that we enjoy today is very different from what it was at its opening in 1968,” Jaime Fonalledas, president of the mall’s owner Empresas Fonalledas, told News Is My Business.

“What is not going to change is the unwavering commitment to continue being that new town square where the Puerto Rican family converges, to continue…creating jobs and to attract the best commercial concepts that meet the needs of consumers,” he said.
