Saks to exit one of nation’s most upscale malls

5/27/2016

Saks Fifth Avenue plans to shutter its 107,000-sq.-ft. store at The Mall at Short Hills, in Short Hills, New Jersey, amid plans to open a flagship in a huge retail and entertainment center in the state.

As previously announced, the upscale retailer plans to open a store at the under-construction, three-million-sq.-ft. American Dream Meadowlands mega-center, in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

"Saks is committed to our shoppers in the New Jersey market with our investment in a brand-new Saks Fifth Avenue store at American Dream," the company said in a statement.

Saks did not reveal when it would close its Short Hill store, which is currently the only Saks Fifth Avenue store in New Jersey. The retailer closed its only other New Jersey location, at The Shops at Riverside, in Hackensack, at the end of 2014.

In a report by northjersey.com, Michael McAvinue, general manager of the tony Mall at Short Hills, said mall owner Taubman Co. "will recapture the space and plans to renovate and re-merchandise the space in a way that will be exciting for Short Hills shoppers."
