Phillips Edison and the shopping center of the future

5/24/2017

A decade from now, there’s not likely to be a shopping center — a successful one, at least — without click-and-pick meals, several fitness options, and healthy food and beverage purveyors.

That was the take of Phillips’ Edison’s VP of national accounts Michael Conway during a session at the RECon show. Some things all centers will soon provide, according to Conway:

Grocery technology: Delivery programs, “click and pick” option, and prepared meals are examples of how traditional grocers like Kroger and Publix have adapted and responded to consumer needs.

Clicks to bricks: Showrooms like Bonobos, Rent the Runway, BaubleBar, and Gap’s Athleta, will continue to emerge as online retailers find it as a way to achieve growth through brick-and-mortar locations.

Personal fitness: Studio concepts like CycleBar, Soul Cycle, Core Power Yoga, Orange Theory Fitness, and Pure Barre will continue to proliferate.

Healthy food options: QSRS will get healthier and trendier with concepts like Grabbagreen, Chopt, Core Life Eatery, sweetgreen, BibibBob, Taziki’s and Newks.

Food halls: This quickly-becoming-standard format will double at centers in the next three years to more than 200. Eataly, the leading food hall developer, has 35 locations now with many more in the works.

“We all have to continue to adapt. When you have an innovative mind-set, new ideas come to light,” Conway said.
