New York -- Activism, yoga classes and free repairs are all on the menu at Patagonia’s new store in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood.

The global outdoor lifestyle retailer, one of the industry’s most dedicated environmentalists, is marking 20 years of doing business in the Big Apple.

Located in what was originally a warehouse that belonged to a dry goods dealer, the three-story, 14,000-sq.-ft. store combines a premium retail experience with community environmental activism. Among the features: a “Worn Wear” repair station whose staffers work to repair Patagonia products in an attempt to keep the garments on customers’ backs and out of landfills.

The store’s 3,500-sq.-ft. community workspace is designed as an area where environmental non-profits in New York City can hold meetings and events. Staff and volunteers are encouraged to use the space to work or hold meetings during store hours. Free weekly yoga sessions are offered each week on Sunday morning.

In keeping with Patagonia’s environmental ethos, reclaimed materials are used throughout the space. The cashwrap was created from reclaimed marble steps and pavers from the sculpture garden at the Museum of Modern Art. The materials had been in storage for over a decade since the renovation of the museum. Tables, fixtures and beams throughout the store are made with reclaimed longleaf pine from the historic Domino Sugar Refinery.

Six hand-stitched and embroidered quilts by Brooklyn-based Haptic Labs adorn the store. Each is based on famous climbing routes and topographical maps. An alpine bivouac installation pays tribute to Patagonia’s climbing roots. Also on display in the store is a peddle-powered camper.
