Ohio Mall enters its 41st year with a positive outlook

1/2/2019
As with most mature enclosed malls, 2017 was a tough year for the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville, an eastern Ohio town close by the Pennsylvania and West Virginia borders.

Kmart, RadioShack, Woodbury Outfitters, and MC Sports were among the longtime retailers that closed shop at the Cafaro-owned property. Toys “R” Us followed suit in 2018, the 40th anniversary of the mall’s opening.

But Tilt Studio and Honda Direct Line filled some of the empty spaces, joining a dining and entertainment lineup that include Osaka Japanese Steakhouse, Garfields, Panera Bread and Kidz Zone. The mall also features the only Macy’s location between Columbus and Pittsburgh.

“For 2019, we are planning on having a great year for the mall,” Cafaro communications director Joe Bell told the Wheeling News-Register. “Having these new retailers will change the mall in a positive way, and it is just going to be a great thing.”

Shopper traffic could see a positive effect with the construction of a connector road from U.S. 40 across I-70 to the mall entrance that includes reconstruction of half a mile of the mall’s ring road.
