Meijer to build first Detroit store

8/14/2009

Grand Rapids, Mich Meijer is expected to sign an agreement Friday to build a 190,000-sq.-ft. supercenter at the Shoppes at Gateway Park, its first in the market, according to a report by the Detroit News.

The paper said that Meijer will sign a purchase agreement with shopping center developer Gateway Park LLC on Friday, giving the company 120 days to complete a site plan.

The $80 million open-air shopping center broke ground late June after several years of delays due to the poor economy and the lack of commitment from an anchor tenant. Once Meijer inks the deal, the developers can begin leasing the remaining space.

The mall is expected to open in 2011 as Detroit's largest commercial real estate development in five decades.
