Kohl’s confirms test of off-price store in Cherry Hill, New Jersey

5/20/2015

Menomonee Falls, Wis. -- Kohl’s Corp. confirmed reports that it will soon begin testing a highly discounted format, called "Off Aisle by Kohl’s,” with a store set to open in early June in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

“Off-Aisle by Kohl’s is a single store that will enable Kohl’s to test new ways to provide its customers with the opportunity to purchase merchandise at a highly discounted price,” said Julia Fennelly, corporate public relations manager, Kohl’s. “Initially, this merchandise will consist of like-new items that have been returned to Kohl’s stores or Kohls.com. Eventually, other merchandise will be added to the assortment.”

The off-price wars have been heating up in recent months. In May, Macy’s announced it would debut its off-price concept, called Macy’s Backstage, in fall 2015, opening four test stores in metro New York City. There is little mystery as the attraction of the off-price segment, which is dominated by such major players as TJX Cos., Ross Stores and Burlington. A fall 2014 report by Moody’s Investor Services noted that the off-price apparel will continue to outperform other areas of the retail industry over the next five years.
