Harris Teeter plans LEED store

Matthews, N.C. Harris Teeter will open its first store that will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification on May 6, in Charlottesville, Va.

The 48,000-sq.-ft. supermarket is 25% more energy efficient than the industry average. With an eye to LEED certification, more than 30% of all building materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the store, 82% of all construction waste was recycled, and 50% of all wood came from certified sustainable forests.

The new store also has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Partnership’s Gold-Level certification. Harris Teeter is only the third store in the nation to achieve this level of certification. The GreenChill certification program recognizes individual stores for using environmentally friendlier commercial refrigeration systems.

Harris Teeter has nearly 180 stores in the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and Washington, D.C.
