Harris Teeter to open new eco-friendly grocery store

5/21/2009

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Harris Teeter is breaking ground on a new, environmentally friendly store that will anchor the 60,500-sq.-ft. Rivertowne Place shopping center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

As proposed, the 53,000-sq.-ft. Harris Teeter will be part of South Carolina’s first shopping center to be registered under the Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Sustainable attributes include recycled construction materials, low-flow toilets, energy-efficient lighting and new refrigeration methods.

“We are going to recycle as much as possible,” said Dawn Reeves, director of environmental sustainability for Harris Teeter.

The Rivertowne store is part of an expansion plan that the Matthews, N.C.-based grocery chain mapped out last year. At least six locations have been proposed for the local area. The Mt. Pleasant store will be the company’s third in the town.

Harris Teeter opened its first LEED-certified grocery store May 6 near Charlottesville, Va. Two others are in the works, in northern Virginia and Maryland.
