Department store retailer exiting downtown San Diego

6/24/2016

Nordstrom plans to shutter its location at Horton Plaza, in downtown San Diego. The store, which opened in 1985, will remain open through August 26, 2016.

"These are always tough decisions to make, but in taking a look at the store's performance and our business needs into the future, we believe this is the best direction to take," said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom. "We look forward to serving our loyal Horton Plaza customers at our other San Diego stores.”

The retailer operates two other full-price stores in the area, one at Fashion Valley, San Diego, and one at University Town Centre, in La Jolla. The Town Centre store, which opened in 1984, will relocate to a new space in the mall next year and re-open with the company’s latest store design.

Nordstrom also operates four off-price Nordstrom Rack stores in the San Diego area.

The closure of the store at Horton Plaza impacts about 180 non-seasonal employees.

"We've told our people that with opportunities at our nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores, we will have a spot for everyone who wants to stay with the company," said Nordstrom.
