Delayed Wal-Mart opening in Austin back on track

2/1/2010

Austin, Texas Wal-Mart Stores has released renderings for its newest Austin, Texas, location near Northcross Mall. The renderings were released nearly four years after it was originally proposed.

A spokesperson for company said the new store will open this fall. The plans call for 99,000-sq.-ft. building, nearly half the size of original drawings that called for 192,000 sq. ft. in two buildings. In 2008, the company downsized the project in the wake of significant community push back.

Northcross Mall developer Lincoln Property Co. first unveiled Wal-Mart's plans in late 2006.

Area residents immediately resisted, filing several unsuccessful lawsuits, according to The Austin Business Journal. The company compromised, reducing the size and agreeing to surface parking in lieu of a garage.
