Barneys New York is bringing an icy winter chill — literally — to its holiday windows.
With a theme of “Chillin’ Out,” the specialty retailer has transformed the windows of its Manhattan flagship into a winter wonderland, complete with 35-ft. fully functioning ice locker that features daily live ice carving.
The ice locker, featured in the windows entitled “Ice Castles" and "Ice Carvers," maintains a temperature of 3 degrees to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, and utilizes a custom misting system, which enables the creation and maintenance of the ice formations. Every day, ice carvers from New York-based Okamoto Studio will transform ice blocks into holiday-themed sculptures. See a video on the ice locker:
In addition to the window with the ice carvings, winter themes also play out in the retailer’s additional windows. Famed artist Dale Chihuly created a glass sculpture for one window, which appears grand crystalline explosion composed of individual hand-blown glass icicles. The sculpture is set above a black pool of reflective water, giving the appearance it is frozen in midair.
Barneys partnered with Christie THREE SIXTY to integrate the use of 3D digital mapping onto the window, and choreographed lighting effects are projected onto the sculpture. The lighting cycle starts with pure white before moving into a sequence of snow flurries, ending in fiery display of red and yellow light projected onto the 700 hand-blown glass elements.
Social Media
In conjunction with the holiday windows, Barneys has launched a social media campaign. Participants can take a photo in front of any Barneys New York window display nationwide and post to Instagram tagging @BarneysNYOfficial with the hashtag #BNYCHILLINOUT.
Winners will have their Instagram handle featured in an ice sculpture in the Madison Avenue windows for 24 hours, and posted to the Barneys Instagram channel.
