Four years of construction in Miami’s Brickell financial district culminates on Thursday with the opening of a three-level, open-air retail center featuring the city’s first new Saks Fifth Avenue store in 30 years.
The opening of the 500,000-sq.-ft. shopping plaza will be the first official event at Brickell City Centre, a billion-dollar mixed-use project developed by Swire Properties and retail co-developers Whitman Family Development and Simon Property Group. The project encompasses five city blocks to the west of Brickell Avenue and south of the Miami River.
Developers say a retail center has long been missing from the financial district, and that their 100-plus-store version will cater to businessmen.
“We’re looking forward to a strong collection of men-specific retailers, with brands like Boglioli, Kiton, Baldinini, Stitched – which will have a scotch lounge – and Acqua di Parma, which will operate a barber shop within its store,” said Debora Overholt, Swire’s VP of retail. “BCC’s Saks Fifth Avenue will even have men-specific stylists.”
Other center highlights include a CMX movie theater and a three-level Italian food hall.
Swire reports that 92% of the retail center is leased or committed, and that 20% of tenants are new to the Florida market. Brickell City Centre also includes two 390-unit, luxury apartment towers and two class-A office buildings.
