Azalea regional shopping center breaks ground

9/19/2012

South Gate, Calif. -- Primestor Development announced that Azalea Regional Shopping Center has launched construction in South Gate, Calif. The 380,000-sq.-ft. project, expected to be completed by early 2014, will include retailers, restaurants and services in a modern setting with water features, a large open-air plaza, Wi-Fi and gathering areas.

"Azalea will bring quality retail and dining to an area that has long needed it, as it fulfills a critical part of South Gate's General Plan 2035, which calls for a landmark district at this location to serve as a gateway to the city," said Arturo Sneider, partner at Los Angeles-based Primestor.

The 32-acre site was an Ameron pipe manufacturing facility from 1928 to 2005, when Ameron ceased operations and demolished most of the site’s structures. Various retail buildings including an Arco gasoline station sprung up during the 1940s, necessitating substantial cleanup on the property. Primestor, through one of its investment vehicle urban opportunity funds, acquired the site in late 2010, and began the redevelopment process. Now cleared by all oversight agencies, development can begin on the retail, entertainment and transit-oriented project.

Leasing also is underway on azalea, which will combine national, regional and local retailers, dining and services with a particular eye to the area's Latino consumers.
