New York — Apple has opened its sixth store in Manhattan, on the Upper East Side in a Beaux Arts building that was originally the home of the U.S. Mortgage & Trust bank in the 1920s. The site, on Madison Avenue, most recently housed a luxury retailer.
Apple worked to restore the building’s original grandeur, resulting in a store with its own distinct look and feel. The stairs and other parts of the architecture were restored with Botticino marble, which was used in the bank. It also added six metal chandeliers, which, with the help of old photographs, were made to match the ones that hung in the bank.
A reinforced vault, which dates back to the building’s first tenant, is located below the store. The restored vault now serves as a special room for meetings and a place where VIP customers can try on the Apple Watch.
