Walmart is using state-of-the-art technology to combat one of retailing’s most longstanding challenges.
The retail giant has deployed cameras with artificial intelligence to reduce checkout theft in more than 1,000 U.S. stores, reported pcmag.com, which cited a report by Business Insider. The retailer began investing in the surveillance system ( known internally as Missed Scan Detection) several years ago in an effort to reduce shrinkage due to theft, scanning errors, waste and fraud, the report said.
The system is able to detect when an item goes unscanned or is mis-scanned. It reports the error to a checkout attendant who can then approach and rectify the problem, according to the report. To read the full story, click here.
