Union Votes for Safeway Contract
Roseville, Calif. A union of supermarket workers said Friday it voted to approve a new four-year labor contract with two of Safeway Inc.'s chains in Northern California. The contract covers about 25,000 employees at 300 Safeway and Vons supermarket chains in the area.
The union, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), said the new contract includes wage increases and improvements in health care, pensions and job-protection language.
Under the new contract, UFCW members will not be required to pay premiums for health care, the union added.
