Target settles in racial disparity hiring lawsuit

4/5/2018
Target Corp. has settled a complaint that includes grievances from more than 10 years ago.

The retailer agreed to pay $3.7 million to settle a potential class-action lawsuit over allegations that its use of criminal background checks in the hiring process disproportionately kept African-American and Latino applicants from getting a job, reported the StarTribune.

As part of the proposed settlement, eligible African-American and Latino applicants who, since May 2006, were denied employment from a Target store due to a criminal-background check will be eligible for “priority hiring.”

In addition, independent consultants will work with Target to recommend potential changes to its guidelines for using criminal history in hiring decisions, and the retailer is giving $600,000 to five organizations that work to help individuals with criminal backgrounds find employment, the report said.
