Target finds itself in middle of national debate


An announcement by Target on its website saying it that would allow employees and customers to choose the restroom and fitting room that corresponded with their gender identities has thrust the chain into the middle of a contentious national debate.

An online petition by the conservative American Family Association calling for a boycott of Target stores, has been signed by more than 900,000 people, the New York Times reported. On Tuesday, the town of Oxford, Alabama, passed an ordinance forbidding people to use a bathroom that does not match the gender assigned to them at birth. Target has a store in Oxford.
