Stater Bros. honed with EPA’s GreenChill Partnership Award

10/2/2014

San Bernardino, Calif. -- Stater Bros. Markets received the “Best Emissions Rate” Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) GreenChill Partnership for having the lowest corporate-wide refrigerant emissions rate of all the GreenChill partners in 2013. There are approximately 8,000 GreenChill partner stores throughout the nation.

Stater Bros. also received the EPA’s GreenChill Partnership “Best Emissions Rate” Award for 2012. Additionally, the company is the only Southern California grocer to have eight stores that have been EPA GreenChill certified at the Gold Level.

“In earning GreenChill’s ‘Best Emissions Rate’ Award for the second consecutive year, Stater Bros. has proven itself to be a leader in reducing the industry’s impact on the environment. Stater Bros. is demonstrating to other supermarkets that it is possible to achieve consistently low emissions rates, which benefits the environment as well as the company’s bottom line,” said GreenChill program manager Tom Land.

EPA’s GreenChill Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. It helps supermarkets transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants; reduce harmful refrigerant emissions and adopt greener refrigerant technologies and environmental best practices.

Stater Bros.’ commitment to the environment is further demonstrated by the company’s energy reduction and recycling efforts. Stater Bros. has replaced or retrofitted its refrigerated cases with new glass doors, reducing energy usage by 60%. Other standard energy reducing design features include LED lighting and energy management systems that control refrigeration, HVAC, demand response, and lighting. The chain also removes over 125 million pounds of waste from landfills each year through various sustainability programs.
