Southern Family appoints president

Birmingham, Ala. Former Tops Markets executive VP Max Henderson Jr., has been named president of Southern Family Markets. The role of president is a newly created position for the grocery chain.

Max T. Henderson will be responsible for all the food store banners it operates in four states.

Southern Family was purchased Bruno’s Supermarkets out of bankruptcy last year.

Henderson spent the majority of his 28-year career at international supermarket chain Ahold and most recently as executive VP and general manager for its Tops Markets. Ahold, at one time, also owned Bruno’s.

After leaving Ahold, Henderson did consulting work within the supermarket industry, including at Southern Family.

Southern Family operates grocery chains Bruno’s, Food World, Piggly Wiggly, Southern Family Markets and SFM Liquor Stores in four states.
