Report – Wal-Mart to eliminate 250 China jobs, open nine new stores in China

12/2/2014

Bentonville, Ark. – Wal-Mart reportedly plans to improve efficiency in its China operation by eliminating 250 jobs, and also open nine new stores and a new distribution center in China by the end of 2014. According to Bloomberg, the positions that will be cut are mostly marketing and merchandising roles, along with some cuts in departments including tax and asset protection.

Wal-Mart has already consolidated buying functions in its Shenzhen, China headquarters and is mostly cutting low- and mid-level employees. The planned cuts follow the dismissal of about 30 senior executives in China in November.

However, the new stores and distribution center are expected to create about 6,000 new jobs, Wal-Mart will have 31 stores in China by the end of the year and has previously said it will open 110 stores and distribution centers there by 2016.
