Popular supermarket is a victim of the blizzard

1/25/2016

It looks like Trader Joe’s in Westfield, New Jersey, has taken its final curtain call — at least for a while.

The supermarket, which is located in the upscale town’s thriving downtown area, fell victim to the blizzard that walloped New Jersey on Saturday, as part of the roof collapsed, which caused the exterior walls to buckle into the middle of the building.

The store is located in an older building that has a flat roof. (It doubled its size in 2013 when it expanded into a building next door.) Fortunately, Trader Joe’s was closed at the time of the collapse. Workers were able to shut off the electricity and the water, local media outlets reported.

According to an announcement by the mayor of Westfield, Andy Skibitsky, the building experienced “a major roof collapse apparently due to the structural stress of the heavy winds and the weight of the snow.”
