Albertsons uses analytics to cut down on theft

10/24/2017
Albertsons Companies is taking new steps to fight retail crime.

Shoplifting and theft risks have become an unavoidable cost of doing business in retail. However, Albertsons is ready to gain the upper hand through a new partnership.

The supermarket operator is using a risk management platform from Alto US to fight back against repeat offenders and organized retail crime (ORC) gangs. Specifically, the solution uses analytics to merge retailers’ data with industry-wide resources — a move that will bridge the gap between retail, law enforcement, and the judicial system to facilitate prosecution of repeat shoplifters and ORC rings.

Besides lowering losses due to shrink, the platform will also help the grocer improve store safety for employees and customers, while contributing to a reduction in crime in the community, according to Albertsons.

“The ALTO program has designed a strategy that effectively brings law enforcement, prosecutors, and retailers together, with a goal of not only reducing crime in stores, but also increasing sales and enhancing our shoppers’ experience,” said Kathleen Smith, CFI, VP of loss prevention for Albertsons.

Albertsons operates stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia under 20 banners including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen and Carrs.
