One woman’s act of kindness will ensure that countless homeless kids in shelters in New York City have a happy holiday.
Carol Suchman, a philanthropist and a director of her family's Manhattan-based New York Venture Partners, buys toys for foster children throughout the year. But when she realized Hudson Party Store, located near her downtown home, had gone out of business with all its inventory still sitting on the shelves, she was inspired to take action.
"When I saw the For Rent sign go up, I got the idea to call the owner and see if the toys were for sale," she told Today.com via email.
Suchman did a "quick visual inventory" of the store's inventory of toys, which ranges from stuffed animals and dolls to puzzles and school supplies. She then made an offer to the store owner, who was overjoyed with the price, reported Today.com.
Suchman reached out to others, including the city’s Department of Homeless Services, to ensure that her idea of donating the toys to local homeless shelters would become reality. It all came together and the toys are packaged and ready to be distributed.
"This is the first time anyone has ever bought out an entire store for a donation to our shelter kids," stated Antonio Rodriguez, the special-events coordinator for New York City’s Department of Homeless Services, in the report. "We are grateful for this generous donation and are excited to be able to bring some joy to these children who have so little this holiday season."
