Weis Markets aims to acquire Giant Markets

Sunbury, Pa. Weis Markets said Thursday it plans to purchase the stores of Binghamton, N.Y.-based Giant Markets. It said it expects to complete the purchase in 90 days.

Weis Markets will purchase Giant Markets' stores located in Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, Endwell and Johnson City (all of which are in Broome County, N.Y.).

"This acquisition is an excellent strategic fit for our company,” said Weis Markets' vice chairman Jonathan Weis.

Weis Markets operates 154 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia. In 2008, it generated $2.4 billion in sales.
