Only one retailer made the top 20 in a ranking that highlights the top 50 U.S. companies that have succeeded in business while also demonstrating outstanding respect, care and concern for their employees, their communities and the environment.
Regional supermarket retailer Wegmans Food Market took the #11 spot in the “Companies That Care” ranking, published by People Magazine in partnership with research firm Great Place to Work. The rankings are based on surveys representing over 4.5 million employee's experiences of how their workplaces have made a difference in their lives and in their communities. Rankings also reflect Great Place to Work's assessment of the generosity of each organization's benefits, philanthropic and community support.
Colleen Wegman, president & CEO of the family-owned, 97-store supermarket chain, pointed to the important role employees play in achieving this recognition.
"When we care about each other, help our customers and give back to the communities where we operate, everything else seems to fall into place," she said.
The only other retailers that made the list were Patagonia, No. 21; Ikea, No. 31; Nordstrom, No. 34; REI, No. 37; and Quik Trip, No. 49. The No. 1 spot was taken by Salesforce.com.
The “Companies That Care” list will be featured in the August 6 issue of People, which hits newsstands on Friday, July 27.
