Walmart has not been sitting idly by while Amazon racks up sales and attention for its Prime Day event.
The discount titan launched its own online sales promotion July 1. Offerings include a free 30-day trial of its ShippingPass program, which offers consumers unlimited, two-day free shipping for a year, special online rollback prices which will last 90 days or more, and free shipping with no minimum purchase on its e-commerce site from Monday, July 11 – Friday, July 15.
According to a new infographic released by Walmart, so far customers are taking advantage of its special online deals. Signups for ShippingPass have more than quadrupled since the free trial offer was announced. Top ShippingPass categories have included home, consumables and apparel. For customers opting for free same-day store pickup on July 11-12, popular items included Apple TVs, as well as Intex inflatable airbed mattresses and Hamilton Beach microwave ovens.
Top rollback deals since July 1 have included Samsung 55-inch 4K Ultra HDTVs, marked down to $598 from $1,199; Lego Star Wars Tie Fighters, reduced to $139.99 from $299.99, and Slumber mattresses-in-a-box, lowered to $89 from $149.
“At Walmart, we believe saving money every day is better than just one, and that all customers should save, not only some,” said Fernando Madeira, president and CEO, Walmart.com.
Analysis of Walmart digital content engagement on July 12, 2016 by marketing technology company Amobee shows that 44% of the retailer’s engagement was Amazon-related. According to Amobee, this indicates Walmart’s rival sale on Prime Day had some success; even with there being almost seven times more digital content engagement around Amazon than around Walmart on the day.
