Walmart hits bottom

5/4/2009

While Target featured some cool electronic items and a free gift on the cover of its circular, Walmart went the opposite direction with a promotional piece that screamed value, due to a large blue $2 in the center of its glossy ad. At that price, customers could buy a greeting card, a gift bag or a five-ounce package of chocolate cover pretzels. With the value message implanted on the cover, Walmart shifted to an offering of much higher price-point items elsewhere in the ad including a Keurig single cup coffee maker for $99, a $399 Dyson vacuum clean and, on the back cover, a $184 Cricut electronic cutting tool for scrapbooking. It also offered a range of digital products in its ad.
