Walmart goes Hollywood—for Oscars

1/24/2018
Walmart is tapping three Hollywood luminaries to help it craft ads for the Academy Awards broadcast on March 4, on ABC.

Last year, Walmart ran three 60-second original films — all directed by men — during the Academy Awards telecast, with each one featuring a different take on a Walmart receipt. The chain is doing a similar thing this year, but with a timely change: The three advertisements are all directed by females, with credits going to comedian/actress Melissa McCarthy and directors Nancy Myers and Dee Rees respectively. Each starts by showing Walmart’s signature blue shipping box, and will go to show the director’s take on where it has been delivered and what’s inside. For a preview, click here.

The 90th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 and will be televised on ABCTelevision Network.

Walmart is teaming up with Women In Film Los Angeles, an organization that works to achieve parity for and advance the careers of women in the entertainment industry. As part of the campaign, three up-and-coming female filmmakers will shadow the three directors as they set about to create the Walmart Oscars mini-films, according to a report in Variety.

Walmart executives told Variety they are not trying to capitalize on the “#MeToo” movement. Rather, the company is looking to do something that will resonate with the audience watching the annual awards.

“We are aware of the conversation going on, but we are looking to be integrated authentically into the show,” Kirsten Evans, Walmart senior VP of marketing told Variety. “Being a part of a really entertaining night is the sole purpose of what we were trying to accomplish.”
