Walmart Canada opening 11 new supercenters

1/22/2015

Walmart is capping off the end of its fiscal year with a flurry of activity, as the retailer is poised to open more stores in Canada.

Walmart said it will open 11 new supercenters by Jan. 29, completing its expansion for the company's current fiscal year ending Jan. 31.

These openings will bring Walmart’s total store count in Canada to 394 stores.

"We're thrilled to bring our supercenter format, offering a full complement of fresh groceries, to Prince Edward Island for the first time as well as the other nine openings happening today and next week," said Gino DiGioacchino, executive vice president of ecommerce and chief of operations at Walmart Canada. "We want to help as many Canadian families as possible save money on their weekly groceries and their general merchandise need. We are looking forward to hearing from our customers."

The projects include building new stores and expanding, remodeling or relocating existing stores. Including investments in its distribution network and ecommerce, the projects represent an investment of more than $500 million in the Canadian economy. For the first time, both PEI Walmart locations will offer a full complement of fresh groceries.

The new phase of expansion comes as Target recently announced that it will be exiting Canada and closing all of its stores there. This presents another opportunity for Walmart to further expand with the stores that Target will be divesting.

Walmart Canada today is a growing chain of 394 stores, serving more than 1 million customers each day. Walmart Canada’s online store, www.walmart.ca, is visited by over 400,000 Canadians daily.
