Walmart bring lockers to hometown supercenter
Walmart’s newest omnichannel initiative is on display at a supercenter in Northwest Arkanas where the retailer has installed lockers for online order pickup.
The large blue structure is located just inside the entrance to a supercenter in Rogers, Ark. and builds upon the retailer’s well-established Site to Store omnichannel offering. The big difference is shoppers who place orders online for in store pick up no longer need to visit the customer service counter to retrieve merchandise. Instead, once merchandise arrives in store or the order is pulled from existing store inventory it is placed in an appropriately sized locker.
When customers arrive in store they enter an access code they have been provided on a touch sceen in the center of the locker. The locker door in which their goods have been place then swings open and the customer collects their purchase.
At first glance, the locker structure is a bit confusing because the individual lockers have no identifying letters or numbers or handles that would let customers know the structure contains merchandise. In fact, the tolerances between the locker doors are so tight the structure somewhat resembles an in-store billboard to promote Walmart’s digital capabilities.
The locker structure measures approximately six and a half feet tall, 20 feet long and 18 inches deep. Painted a deep blue with white and orange graphics and lettering, the locker is highly visible to shoppers who enter the side of the store where groceries are located.
The structure is capable of accommodating a wide range of product sizes with lockers sizes measuring 18 inches wide by heights including 18 inches, nine inches, six inches and three inches.
