Wal-Mart Workers in Canada Reject Plan to Unionize

British Columbia, Canada, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported that workers in seven stores in Canada rejected a plan to unionize. According to Kevin Groh, spokesman for Wal-Mart Canada Corp., about 70 automotive sales and service associates in seven British Columbia stores voted against representation by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union eight months ago.

Wal-Mart tried to stop the votes from being counted because it objected to the way voting employees were organized—employees from different stores were considered a single bargaining unit. The Labour Board ruled that it was an appropriate way for employees to organize, but Wal-Mart plans to appeal that decision.
