Wal-Mart to unveil own labels at Indian venture

NEW DELHI According to reports, Wal-Mart has plans to introduce its private label brands to its cash-and-carry stores it has launched in India through a joint venture with Bharti Retail.

Wal-Mart will introduce its private labels, including Sam's Choice, Great Value, Kid Connection and Equate, in categories including groceries, stationery and personal care products, reports indicated. In addition, it is reported, that Wal-Mart plans to source products for its Indian private labels from existing Indian suppliers.

On Aug. 6, Wal-Mart and Bharti Retail announced their joint venture arrangement to create Bharti Wal-Mart Private Limited that will operate warehouse club style stores and require Wal-Mart to provide logistics and information systems advice. Plans are for the first of the wholesale cash-and-carry stores to open by the end of next year with between 10 and 15 units in the range of 50,000 to 100,000 square feet planned for the next seven years. Categories of merchandise sold will include fruits and vegetables, groceries and staples, stationery, footwear, clothing, consumer durables and other general merchandise items, the companies said.
