Wal-Mart sells 100 million CFLs
BENTONVILLE, Ark. Wal-Mart Stores today announced it has sold more than 100 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), surpassing its goal for the end of 2007.
“Selling 100 million CFLs in such a short timeframe is a significant achievement on behalf of our customers,” said Andy Barron, Wal-Mart senior vp of hardlines merchandising. “In reaching this goal, we are grateful that our customers and members have seen the economic and environmental benefits of CFLs. With their support, we can continue to have a positive impact on the environment with energy-saving bulbs and other affordable, eco-friendly products at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club.”
According to Wal-Mart, making the switch to CFL bulbs can save customers up to $350 per year. The company added that through initiatives such as special pricing on a private label CFL and selling CFLs online, it has made purchasing the bulbs easier and more cost-effective for its consumers.
Wal-Mart launched the campaign to sell 100 million CFLs last fall in an effort to introduce customers to more energy-efficient products and help them save more than $3 billion on their utility bills.
