Wal-Mart Canada Opens Sustainable Prototype
Wal-Mart Canada announced that it plans to debut its first environmental demonstration store in Burlington, Ontario. The store features a first-of-its-kind application of geothermal technology in a large-scale Canadian retail operation and energy-conserving lighting innovations as well as many other sustainable features.
Wal-Mart Canada said the Burlington supercenter is expected to use an estimated 60% less energy than the company's typical supercenter. It is also expected to divert an estimated 85% of its waste from landfill through a variety of recycling programs.
Additional sustainable features of the store include skylights and light sensors that adjust to the availability of natural light, low flow sinks, toilets and urinals and an environmentally preferable CO2 refrigeration system.
